What If we took our lessons from children

My children are teaching me so much that the learning process is 2-way.  I thought I would share 4 observations with you:

  1. Rain or shine my daughter doesn’t care whether it’s raining or sunny she wants to go outside to play.  We can often put barriers up on getting things done; like the weather.  Each barrier is as an opportunity, for example, a rainy day is the possibility to go outside and splash in wellies.
  2. No cap on creativity; my kids like to play different animals, and I join in.  We walk like dinosaurs, jump like frogs and slither like snakes.  It keeps me incredibly fit!   However, it does more than that I have to think how each animal moves and sound.  The ability to be anything is something we should keep doing past childhood.  The mind-set to explore with no cap on creativity.
  3. Do what they love.  At the moment that is making ice cream in the play dough machine, colouring, reading, role-playing animals and cooking with mummy.  They are always smiling and seem to be progressing well.  We should do what we love in life.
  4. Spread enthusiasm.  My daughter wants to cook, cook and cook.  I am weary that she sees me role modelling, but she also sees me reading and writing essays for my Doctorate so there is a balance.  What is evident is that we have the ability to spread enthusiasm and passion.

What If You Defined You

I have seen myself evolve with different experiences, environments and people.  There were certainly some seeds of my character planted by my parents, but as life has changed difficult decisions have defined me.  Sometimes those have been simple decisions e.g. I can't let that happen.  We are faced with these decisions reguarly, and many people do the right thing.

THE RIGHT THING

The movie that best symbolises this type of decision to me is the true story of Michael Oher in The Blind Side.  A woman who took in a young boy off the street and they changed each others lives.

NO BEST WAY

My sister's keeper is a predicament where there is no right decision.  Do I donate my bone marrow to save my sisters life, or do I say no to let my sister live her life.

WHO AM I

Image

These decisions get to the crux of people defining Who Am I?  The Pursuit of Happyness is such a film where regardless of the challenges integrity is important.  Will Smith reminds me of my dad "don't ever let somebody tell you you can't do something" and "if you want something go get it period"

WHO ARE WE

Who am I is just a cellular level question, and we act in an organism.  Who are we is more complex, as we are affected by the actions of others.  We have different agenda's and pressures.  A community can be divided or come together in the definition of who are we.  The "I" and "We" are connected.  A person may have to stand up for what they believe in, and influence a community to take action.  This kind of decision can be seen in Erin Brockovich's true story.

WHO IS THE COMPANY/COUNTRY?

Finally multiple communities can make up an organisation or country.  A person may need to affect decisions by influencing members, and that can be done directly or indirectly.  A person would need to think through the impact of actions, key players and also stay true to what defines them.

The Last King of Scotland is an extreme example of how a doctor reflected on his morals and saw Idi Amen for who he really was, took personal accountability and put his life in danger in the process.

These movies are just to illustrate the type of decisions we make.  At these critical points in life it is important to remember who you are, what you stand for as a community and who the company or organisation is. Many of them are true stories, and show just how much a defining moment can have on other peoples lives.

6 Ways to KISS

KISS Keep It Simple Stupid or keep it simple stupid is a term we regularly apply to business. Technology can often blur the lines between business and personal life and our lives have more tasks than the generations that preceded us, we could learn a lot to KISS at home.

  1. SLEEP understand what your days look like, and how much energy you need.  Too many people are not getting enough sleep.  Don't waste time at night on rubbish TV, or associates that don't matter.  Of course invest the time in the things and people that do, but know when to cut off, and hit the pillow to be fresh for the next day.
  2. LOW MAINTENANCE first impressions are everything.  However, that does not mean you need to spend a long time getting ready in the morning.  I changed my hair style in my late 20's so that I could get ready end to end in 30 minutes or quicker, and be out the door.  The same is true for your outfit.  If you are a woman for example, you could consider dresses which can easily be put on with no ironing needed, and look great.  Hybrid has a great range of outfits

3. Eat To Live and Don't Live to Eat.  It is important to give your body what it needs, think about what the food is giving you.  It is too easy if you are staying in hotels to slip into bad habits, try to pick hotels which have health services, and good menu options.  If you are at home cooking food can take 5 to 15 minutes, it's a myth that you have to spend a long time in the kitchen.  There are obvious go to recipes like Jamie's 15 minute meals or alternative quick and refreshing recipes from Ottolenghi.

4. SET YOUR BARRIERS don't stay at work just to be seen;instead be effective in the time that you are there.  If you don't set your barriers then your life will not be how you want it.

5. TRAVEL EFFICIENCY if possible think about how to make your travel more efficient.  There is no one size fits all solution here.  It would be down to personal circumstances.  Try to reduce the time it takes to get to work: look for a job nearer to work, working from home or accommodation that is closer (where possible).  Take public transport so that you can utilise the time it takes to travel to work.

6. INVEST IN WHAT MATTERS your time is your investment.  Take time for you, and choose to invest in the things that make you happy, give you energy and make a difference to your world.

Work life balance is not as simple as just a KISS...so it's best to leave you with Nigel Marsh who provides an insightful view on the subject.
